A shared agreement to put the phone down.
Every person on a Paper & Compass journey made the same decision before they arrived. Not halfway. Not with one eye on a screen. Fully, genuinely there.
Once, we lived in the moment. People, connected by the shared fleeting glimmers that built the stories of our lives and the rhythm of our world. We lived in pauses and patience; we connected in the space in between.
Paper & Compass is a promise to live in the moment again, together.
But somewhere along the way, that’s exactly what happened. The quick check that becomes a scroll. The photo posted before the moment is even over. The email that can’t wait, except it can. Half your mind somewhere else, always.
And it isn’t just what we’re missing. It’s what we’ve forgotten how to do. Sit with a stranger and find out who they are. Let a place surprise us when we’re not busy photographing it. Make a connection where we least expected one. Our lives have grown smaller and faster at the same time, and somewhere in that trade we lost the wider, warmer, more human world that used to exist in the pauses.
Paper & Compass is built for people who feel that.
Every person on a Paper & Compass journey made the same decision before they arrived. Not halfway. Not with one eye on a screen. Fully, genuinely there.
The textures, the conversations, the view from wherever you happen to be standing. The things you only notice when you’re actually paying attention.
Deeper with the people you came with. Surprisingly connected to the ones you didn’t know yet. Both things, on the same journey.
The Experience
Every person on a Paper & Compass journey made the same decision before they arrived: to actually be there. Not halfway. Not with one eye on a screen. Fully, genuinely there.
The natural result of being around people who are fully present. People you met through this journey, who chose the same thing you chose. Over coffee, on the pool deck, at the wine bar at the end of a good day. The group finds its rhythm and the conversations follow.
Each day brings opportunities to come together: activities, excursions, moments that are better with more people in them. Join what calls to you. Step away when you want quiet. The group is always there when you’re ready.
A printed itinerary. Something in the mail. The small, specific pleasure of holding something beautiful and real in a world that has moved almost everything to a screen. Paper & Compass brings that feeling back, woven through every part of the journey.
Not staged, not styled, not calculated for likes. Real moments, candidly captured on a camera that is just a camera, not a portal to everything else competing for your attention. The kind of photography that actually tells the story of where you were and who you were with.
The Journeys
Four formats, one philosophy.
Our original format and where the brand began. A small group aboard a premium cruise line, with our cultural framework woven into every sea day and port stop.
Boutique property buyouts and room blocks at extraordinary places. At turquoise beaches, on beautiful islands, in the stunning mountains and more. The setting does half the work. We handle the other half.
Horses, land, campfires, and cell service that forgets to show up. A setting that draws you back to the natural world, to the animals, and to the people you’re with. We bring the right people together and let the land do the rest.
Small group, custom-routed, with operators who understand that experience matters more than itinerary. You don’t stare at Google Maps on cobblestones. We already figured it out.
Sabrina Tinius
Founder, Paper & Compass
I started noticing it on my own vacations: beautiful places, people I love, and still I was reaching for my phone. The habit was so automatic I barely noticed how much less connected I felt to the people with me, how much less I could actually absorb the moments I had traveled so far to have.
When I started talking to others about it I realized I was far from alone. So many of us are craving real world experiences and an escape from the digital tethers of a curated, attention-stealing online world.
What I kept coming back to was that the antidote isn’t just putting the phone down. It’s having something worth putting it down for. People around you who made the same choice. Shared experiences that pull you into the present. That’s what group travel at its best can be, and it’s what Paper & Compass is built around.
Sabrina has led The Enchanted Traveler since 2012.
